The greatest basketball tournament in the history of the sport never disappoints. Two of the top seeds lost in the first weekend, with Purdue becoming just the second top seed in history to lose in the first round to a 16-seed. Break out Fairleigh Dickenson (although sadly their Tournament ended two days later).

Defending champion Kansas lost to Arkansas, Arizona lost to Princeton, and fellow two-seed Marquette was beaten by Tom Izzo and Michigan State.

Sixteen teams remain, and this is who the oddsmakers are favoring to win it all.

Since the NCAA Tournament expanded in 1985, this is just the fourth time that multiple No. 1 seeds failed to get to the Sweet-16. And now, with just two top seeds remaining, not surprisingly, they are the two heavy favorites to win the NCAA title. Alabama has the easiest path, with only a fifth seed, a six seed, and a 15th seed left in the South Region.

Houston faces the Miami Hurricanes in the Sweet-16, and the winner there will play the winner of Xavier and Texas. The NCAA Tournament is now without blue bloods Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, and Kentucky, but UCLA is plenty blue, and they are the highest seed remaining in the West.

The Kansas State Wildcats were picked in the NCAA preseason to finish dead last in the Big 12. Instead, America’s coach, Jerome Tang, who is having more fun than anyone else left in the Tournament, has K-State as the highest remaining seed in the East. Up next for the Wildcats, who just knocked off Kentucky, is Michigan State.

Alabama and Houston are favorites to get things closed out in their regions and make it to the Final Four. In the East, however, Tennessee is only the fourth seed, and they are favored over No. 3 seed K-State (+350). Even No. 7 seed Michigan State (+300) is favored over the Wildcats.

UCLA is the No. 2 seed in the West and is playing in Las Vegas, just up the 15 Freeway from L.A. But at +210, they are actually tied with UConn as West favorites. Just behind them is Gonzaga at +240. Arkansas, who beat Kansas, is at +550.

Ambetter Health 400 Betting Preview

It was a mistake, plain and simple. If Kevin Harvick had taken on just two new tires on his final pit stop, as the rest of the leaders did, as opposed to taking on four new tires, he would have won in Phoenix. His team made the miscalculation with just three laps of racing remaining. It was too little time for Harvick, even running slightly faster on the new set of tires.

He lost, William Byron won for the second consecutive week, and NASCAR has now ended the west coast start to its Cup Season by moving across the country to Atlanta.

Atlanta gave us a wild race last spring – 46 lead changes and 13 cautions – as the repaving of Atlanta Motor Speedway caused it to race much faster and wide open. The winner last spring was William Byron, who comes into Ambetter Health 400 riding a two-race winning streak. Naturally he is the Ambetter Health 400 favorite, and a much-deserved one at that.

Kyle Busch had wins in Atlanta in 2008 and 2013, and he was the Ambetter Health 400 runner-up in 2021. But in the two races last year on the remade Atlanta Motor Speedway he finished 20th and 33rd.

Ross Chastain was the runner-up in both of the Atlanta races last year and he led for a total of 75 laps. He was only 24th in Phoenix last week, but he was ninth at Daytona and third in Fontana. He could very easily get a victory on Sunday.

Ryan Blaney is also one of the favorites to keep an eye on. He has led laps in five of the last six races in Atlanta for a total of 85 laps. He was a winner here in 2021 and he has four top-five finishes at this track since 2020. It’s also worth noting that Blaney just finished as the runner-up in Phoenix.

Best Value Bets

Chase Briscoe has been consistent at Atlanta, finishing 15th and 16th in the two races last season. But he’s coming off a seventh-place finish in Phoenix, he’s a driver on the rise, and a top-five finish this week pays +850. An outright win pays +3300.

Those are the same odds you can get for Erik Jones, who loves drafting tracks like Atlanta. He has finished in the top-10 in three of the last five drafting tracks, which includes a fourth-place Ambetter Health 400 finish here last July. The United Rentals Work United 500 is a bit on the wordy side. So from here on out the NASCAR race this Sunday in Phoenix will simply be referred to as Phoenix.

The race United Rentals Work United 500 is the last of the west coast swing, and then we head back east to Atlanta. And if we’ve learned anything from the start of this Cup Series season, what you don’t know is far greater than what you think you know. We have had six races, and when William Byron crossed the finish line first in Las Vegas last weekend, he became the sixth different winner.

Race favorite Ryan Blaney has never won at United Rentals Work United 500, but he’s been in the top-five a total of five times, including each of the last three races here. Just five months ago in Phoenix he was the runner-up.

Kyle Larson won here in November of 2021. He also has five other top-five finishes at this track. Larson was sixth at Daytona, and he was the runner-up last weekend in Las Vegas.

A strong case could be made for Joey Logano as the race favorite this week in Phoenix. His recent history here is better than anyone’s, with a win last November, a runner-up in 2021, and a win and a third-place finish in the two races held here in 2020. In his last seven races in Phoenix, Logano has led for 612 laps.

Best Value Plays

The intermediate flat track in Phoenix favors a particular type of driver and car, and two of those types of plays are paying particularly long odds – Aric Almirola (+4000) and Ryan Preece (+4500).

Almirola most recently won in New Hampshire, a similar type of track. That same season he finished in sixth place at Phoenix. Overall in his history at Phoenix, he has two top-five finishes, and seven times he has finished in the top-10.

Ryan Preece doesn’t have the history of Almirola, and he hasn’t had many good results in Phoenix. But he’s driving a Ford, just like Almirola, and Ford has led an inordinate amount of laps at Phoenix in recent years, including almost all of the laps last November.

Kyle Larson only finished 18th at Daytona, but he is the favorite because of his history at Fontana. He was the winner here in 2022 and 2017, and he has been the runner-up two other times. Larson loves racing on this track, having led here for 138 laps in his career.

Right on the heels of Larson are Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott. Hamlin has four top-10 finishes at Fontana in his last five races. Hamlin was 17th at Daytona last Sunday. Elliott only made it through half of Daytons before he was taken out in an accident. At this track in 2020, he finished fourth.

Three other drivers are bunched up at +1000, including Christopher Bell, who finished third at Daytona. Bell had three wins last season on his way to a third-place finish in the Cup Series. He led for 20 laps last week.

Ryan Blaney, also at +1000, finished in eighth place at Daytona. In six races in Fontana, he has three top-10 finishes. Two years ago at this race, he led for a total of 54 laps, but ended up limping across the finish in 19th place.

Among the drivers at +1200, Joey Logano, who just finished as the runner-up at Daytona, was fifth at this race last year. In 15 career races at Fontana Logano, last year’s Cup Series champion, has seven top-5 finishes.

Value Picks

One of the forgotten drivers in the field is Austin Dillon, paying +4000. He was the runner-up at this race last year and in his three previous races in Fontana he had two other top-10 finishes.

A pair of +5000 drivers also deserve your Pala Casino 400 attention. The first is Aric Almirola, who has finished in the top-10 in each of the last two Pala Casino 400s. The other is none other than new Daytona 500 champion Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. Yes, it’s hard to win back-to-back starts. Right behind him is Denny Hamlin, and three-time winner of the 500. He took back-to-back wins in 2019 and 2020, and he was also the winner in 2016. He was wiped out of Daytona last year because of an accident, but overall his 2022 was very good. He finished with two wins, 10 top-five finishes, and fifth place in the Cup Series standings.

The winner of the Cup last year, Joey Logano, is tied for the fifth shortest odds at Daytona. He won this race in 2015, but hasn’t been very good on this track in recent years. He was 26th in 2020 after suffering an accident, he had another accident in 2021 that landed him in 12th position, and last year he crossed the finish line in 21st.

It’s the first race of the season, and no one really knows what to expect. And that means that some drivers come into the race carrying excellent value.

Michael McDowell won Daytona 500 race in 2021 and last year he finished seventh. But he’s paying +3500 because he finished last season without a single win. Still, a past champion, and recent champion, is really good value with those long odds.

Best Super Bowl LVII Bets

Coin Toss

If you are planning to bet on the result of the coin toss – heads or tails – there is of course a 50% chance you will win your bet. But if you are betting on the winner of the game based on the winner of the coin toss, buyer beware. Each of the last eight teams to win the coin toss have gone on to lose the game.

This bizarre and inexplicable streak began when the Seahawks won the coin toss but lost to the Patriots, and it extends through last year’s game where the toss was won by the Bengals, but the game was won by the Rams.

Eagles First Half Points

Right now the Eagles first half over/under is 12.5 points. Considering that they averaged a league-best 18.2 points in the first half during the regular season, and have scored 28 and 21 first-half points in the postseason, this is an excellent bet to place.

Gatorade Shower

The final bet of the night takes place after the game is over – the color of the Gatorade shower the winning coach takes as the team celebrates its Super Bowl championship. In Super Bowl LIV the Chiefs showered Andy Reid in orange, which is paying +250 this season.

When the Eagles won in Super Bowl LII, the color of the Gatorade was yellow, which is paying +150.

Where Will the Quarterbacks Go?

The NFL isn’t just from August to February, and the betting on the NFL isn’t limited to just the games on the field. The Ravens and Lamar Jackson appear to be headed for a split. Most people close to Tom Brady think that he will put off retirement for at least another season. They also believe that quarterback Brady and the Buccaneers are likely moving on from one another after a disappointing end to a disappointing season. Where could the GOAT end up in 2023?

Brady’s old offensive coordinator is now the head coach in Las Vegas, and the Jets have said that they are prepared to go all-in on bringing in a veteran quarterback. As places where Brady could win, both the Raiders and Jets make sense. And as a Jets quarterback, he would get to match wits with Bill Belichick twice next season.

Aaron Rodgers

We may have seen the end of Aaron Rodgers in a Green Bay Packers uniform. Either by retirement, or by moving to another team, he certainly is sounding like someone who is tired of playing for the Packers. He said this week that he thinks he can win another MVP award if he is in the right situation. Where might that be?

With Derek Carr on the way out in Las Vegas, reuniting Rodgers with Davante Adams makes a lot of sense. Rodgers will want a place with established weapons, like Adams and tight-end Darren Waller. He would also find that same with the Jets with rookie Garrett Wilson. Although with Brett Favre having gone from the Packers to the Jets, would Rodgers want to follow those same footsteps?

Betting the NFL Divisional Round

Annually it is the best weekend of the year. The fringe playoff teams have been removed from the mix, and only the eight best teams remain, all with the ability to win the NFL Super Bowl.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Kansas City Chiefs (-8.5)

The Jacksonville Jaguars spent the first 30 minutes of their Wild Card game against the Chargers looking like a team that had picked No. 1 overall in the last two NFL drafts. They spent the final 30 minutes looking like a team that can pull off an upset in Kansas City. Who shows up this Saturday?

Probably a team that is in-between. We will see a Jacksonville that definitely belongs, and is definitely on the rise, but they simply don’t yet have the consistency of the Chiefs. And especially at Arrowhead. The rested Chiefs get a big NFL day from Patrick Mahomes and win this game by 10 points.

New York Giants (-7.5) at Philadelphia Eagles

We’re not going to take it as far as predicting a Giants win, but Daniel Jones has been on a tear since he and the Giants were beaten badly by the Eagles in NFL Week 14, and Jalen Hurts isn’t 100 percent. Just how much pain Hurts’ shoulder is still causing is unclear, but in Week 18 he admitted that he was causing him issues.

The rest of the Eagles team is better than the Giants, and that will be enough to get Philly to the NFC Championship. But look for New York to make it a closer game than expected.

Cincinnati Bengals (+5) at Buffalo Bills

When the Bengals and Bills were stopped in Week 17, Cincinnati was up 7-3 and Joe Burrow was looking on point. But since then the Bengals have lost two more offensive lineman, and they head into Buffalo more short-handed than in the Monday game that was canceled.

Both NFL teams struggled to put away backup quarterbacks in the Wild Card round, but Josh Allen’s turnovers are becoming a problem. Even with the offensive line issues Burrow will take advantage of that, just like Miami, and Cincinnati will make this a very close game.

Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers (-4)

Will the real Dallas Cowboys please stand up? Are they the team that struggled against the Commanders and got beat in Week 18, or the team that blew out the Bucs? They are both, and that is the problem for them in this matchup.

San Francisco has been the most consistent NFL team over the final two months of the season, and on both sides of the ball. Even if the good Cowboys show up, it won’t matter. The 49ers are a machine, and they will cover this spread.

NFL Week 18 Betting Picks

One more week of regular season football, and three playoff spots have still yet to be handed out. Eight NFL teams have a chance to win one of those spots.

It’s put up or shut up in the final week of the regular season.

Tennessee Titans at Jacksonville Jaguars (-6.5)

The scenario is simple for this game. Win, and you win the division. In fact, that scenario has been in place for a couple of weeks. The Titans rested a number of their NFL players last week in preparation for the win-and-in game in Jacksonville.

At the most important position on the NFL field, however, no amount of resting can help Tennessee. They are down to a third-string quarterback in Joshua Dobbs, and the Jaguars are getting great NFL play from Trevor Lawrence. At home, the Jags win by more than a touchdown and cover the spread.

Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers (-4.5)

When December began, the Packers were 4-8, and people were calling for the end of the Aaron Rodgers era. Now that we are in January, the Packers are 8-8 and in control of their own playoff destiny. Beat the Lions on Sunday night, and the No. 7 seed in the NFC is theirs.

For the Lions, they too, can get in with a win in this game and help against the Seahawks. If the Rams beat Seattle, and Detroit wins in Lambeau, they are the No. 7 seed. Sadly that is unlikely to happen for Lions fans. Detroit is a very different NFL team on the road, and Green Bay will win and cover.

Los Angeles Rams at Seattle Seahawks (-6.5)

Speaking of those Seahawks, they actually play before the Packers play, so they will do whatever they can to win, even if it is a win without a playoff appearance as a reward. But the Rams also want to win. Beating their rivals, ending the season on a high note, and finding out if there really could be a future with Baker Mayfield are all things on the agenda.

It won’t matter. The 12th man in Seattle will bring it, and at home, the Seahawks will win by a touchdown.

New York Jets at Miami Dolphins (Pick‘em)

The New York Jets have played themselves out of the playoffs with five straight losses. The Dolphins have almost played themselves out of the playoffs with five losses of their own.

If the Patriots win on Sunday, they are in the playoffs. But if New England loses, and the Dolphins win with a backup quarterback, they are the AFC’s final Wild Card team.

It’s a pick’em, and considering the stakes, we’re picking the Dolphins at home.
