NBA Draft 2023 Aftermath

The worst-kept secret in all of sports is now a fact. French sensation Victor Wembanyama is officially a member of the San Antonio Spurs. He was selected with the first overall pick in Thursday night’s NBA Draft, ushering in a new era of basketball in the Alamo City.

The last two times the Spurs had the number one overall pick, they selected David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Both won Rookie of the Year, and both went on to win championships and all-time great status.

The smart money is on Wembanyama to do the same.

Odds to Win NBA Rookie of the Year

Victor Wembanyama (-225)

He is the most talked about prospect since LeBron James. He’s a can’t miss pick for the Spurs, and he will be great from his first NBA game on.

Scoot Henderson (+350)

Thanks to the addition of third overall pick Scoot Henderson, the Portland Trail Blazers may be able to rebuild their team without having to trade Damian Lillard. Henderson is an explosive scorer who comes into the NBA with two years of G League experience under his belt, which should mean that he is dangerous right away.

Chet Holmgren (+375)

Yes, Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder is eligible to win the Rookie of the Year award. The second overall pick in 2022 missed the entire season with a Lisfranc fracture, but he is just as highly touted now as he was a year ago.

NBA Draft 2023 Aftermath

The former Gonzaga Bulldog set a summer league record for most blocked shots in a game, and in his summer league debut last year, he had 23 points and six blocks.

Brandon Miller (+950)

As it turns out, the controversy around Alabama’s Brandon Miller did not cost him any draft position. He was the second overall pick of the Charlotte Hornets.

He will also spend his rookie season being compared to Scoot Henderson, the player the Hornets could have gotten instead. Miller is clearly talented, but he’s also slight, which could ding his effectiveness inside.

Amen Thompson (+1500)

The first of the Thompson twins, Amen is the newest member of the Houston Rockets, going to them with the fourth overall pick. He is an incredible athlete and should be great right from the start.

Cam Whitmore (+2000)

Falling to the Rockets with the 20th overall pick was Villanova’s Cam Whitmore. He’s an incredible talent who was expected to be a lottery pick, until reports of a few bad workouts caused him to fall.

Ausar Thompson (+2200)

The other Thompson twin was taken with the fifth overall pick by the Detroit Pistons. Many analysts are calling him at reach at No. 5, but he is a well-rounded basketball player, even without the potential upside of his brother.
